- VANDER'S DESTINY -

Brother's Keeper - Chapter One

Every year at summer's eve there was a festival the like you would only see once a year. Caravan's full of travelers from the North and South alike as well as Goblin merchants from the dark parts of the world came to the fairgrounds to peddle their wares. The fairgrounds were just outside the King's castle walls, so as to allow patrols to keep a close watch on all the visitors. This was a free kingdom and had a good king, which always is accompanied by supervision and careful detail to the ongoings of the kingdom.

This summer's eve celebration was special to Vander, because his older brother Phillip had specially invited him to come watch the Ceremony of Valor, where Phillip was to be recognized for his prowess with a sword. "I want you to come and see me get this medal", Phillip had said. "And I want you to meet some of my friends from the monestary, since you'll be going there at the end of the summer."

Phillip had spent the majority of his free time at the monestary dueling with other students, challenging the teachers, and practicing on stuffed dummies when no one was around to help him hone his skills. This ontop of his Monestary combat classes was a huge strain...physically, mentally, and emotionally...and still he had found time to include Vander, making him feel the most special a brother in the world could feel.

You see, Vanders Mother was deeply concerned about his health, he being so sickly at times. But even moreso she feared for the health of his heart. Doctor's had been by to help, and could provide nothing to strengthen this young boy. The Paladin's of Legend that patrolled the lands had exercized all the faith they could, which said a lot...but alas it was a weakness that the Gods had destined to either consume this young lad, or perhaps it would become a strength somehow.

"Phillip please find a way to include your brother with what you do and with your friends." She had pleaded with him more then one time. "You know the other kids pick on him. He desperately needs a friend."

Each time she had brought this up, Phillips brow creased with too many years showing on his nineteen year old face. He wanted to tell her things like He isn't old enough, or bringing my tag along brother ruins the fun, or even sometimes he felt - you always ask me to think of him, but what about my fun? what about my friends? This last thought of course was moot, because Phillip was well liked by most and especially among the girls. He would find as he wandered the monestary that certain girls he had classes with would peek around the corner of a hall smiling sweetly at him. He had a disarming smile, which made him easy to get along with... no, Phillip was never in danger of losing his popularity.

Instead of voicing any of his thoughts, each time Phillip would lower his head a bit and say "I'll do my best Mother." And he really would do his best, of this his Mother was sure. At hearing this, she would smile, hug him tightly, and bustle off to get the house clean, or to start cooking a warm meal tha twould match the warmth she was feeling in her heart.

One day Vander, you will be in a position to help me...and I just hope that I've been a good enough brother for you to return the favor, Phillip thought as he raced off to get ready for the ceremony.

What Phillip didn't realize was, that Vander could never have had a better brother. He had never once raised his hand against him, he had tried to include him as much as possible...he had earned his place in Vander's heart as a true Hero. Not many nineteen year olds could be considered a Hero, but in this case, Phillip was one through and through. He was not perfect, as he would tell you at the drop of a pin, but he was a good person down to the very core of his soul.

Complexes do have negative impacts on the very threads of our lives, but in the end the things we do whether compelled or not which are Good and Kind, will always be met out in the end with rewards which befit the deeds we have done. Phillip could never have guessed as he was approaching adulthood, that he would ever need Vander more then Vander now needed his kindness.

Now where were we? Oh yes, back to the festival. There were many booths which littered the King's fairgrounds which had many yummy treats. Bubble candies which changed shape and flavor as you ate them, enchanted chocolate lions which would follow you roaring a tiny roar which befitted their ten inch size, as well as mini figurines made of hardened cakes that were made in the likeness of the leaders of the monestary. Little bread Paladins would charge on their horses and do battle with the bread Priests and Clerics of the monestary.

Vendors had carts full, of practice swords and shields and armors that would fit a child, as this was one of the best selling wares during the festival. How the children that attended wished to be a righteous and powerful paladin, or a penitent and dangerous priest. These children needed heroes much as Vander did...and in these times these Heroes meant hope, and a chance to live with much merrymaking and contentment.
It was so much fun, and not cheap by any means. Both Phillip and Vander had been given Silver pieces as their festival allowance which their Mother had been saving for them secretly all year long. Money was very scarce in their family, but the festival only happened once a year.

---------------------------------------------

The celebration went as planned, with a joyous feeling of merriment. A few of the drunken townsmen had to be taken to the jails to wait out their sour moods. There was a light breeze that blew past the ceremony, giving relief from the oncoming summer sun. But all in all it was a peaceful occasion.

When the medals were presented, Phillip's family and friends cheered the loudest. Vander's throat was so very sore the next morning. He had yelled his hardest, because his brother was the best at swords at the monestary academy, and everyone should know it! He had wanted Phillip to hear him so bad, that tears had come to his eyes from yelling so loud. Phillip smiled at his family, an intense feeling of love emanated from him, warming their hearts.

After the celebration ended, it was time to go home. Phillip went back to the monestary to finish packing his things, so he could come home and enjoy the summer...after all, if he had earned one thing, it was to relax this year, as next year would be even more rigorous learning and training.

Vander held his Mother's arm with his Father on the other side as the three of them went home. What an amazing day that had been! He thought to himself. If you had seen the smile on his face, you could tell that his worries were miles and miles away. This was definitely a perfect day!

STAY TUNED FOR NEXT WEEK 11/16/05 when I release the Second Chapter! :)
